Just Another Saturday Night is a video that profiles a local crash. This features four young men who set out on an ordinary night socialising, however around 9pm their lives changed forever after the vehicle they were in lost control and crashed. The story demonstrates how quickly things can change. Jared (a survivor of the crash) describes the events of the evening. The resource forms a significant part in a number of our education opportunity and events, including Hawkes Bay Youth Road Safety Expo, and joint projects between the Department of Corrections and New Zealand Police.
Stopping Distance 50/50 is a resource that explains many of the factors to road trauma and how speed, distraction and other factors can contribute to the outcome. The video includes a very personal local story of Mrs Penman who tragically lost her life on a pedestrian crossing after a distracted and texting driver failed to stop in time.
Fatigue is one of the high-risk road safety issues that our road safety partners feature as part of the comprehensive road safety program delivered across Hawkes Bay. RoadSafe Hawke’s Bay organises regional Fatigue Stop Checkpoints with information and giveaways for the public. Our resources are used in all the road safety education events and activities.
Speed is also one of the highest-risk road safety issues we have in Hawke’s Bay – whether it’s on rural or urban roads. It’s also part of regular road safety programmes across our region. Encouraging slower speeds means reduced severity from impacts or injuries when a collision may occur.
Drinking and driving don’t mix. RoadSafe Hawke’s Bay continues to promote and engage our community about not drinking and driving and educate people around what they should consider if they’re out socialising to minimise road safety issues associated to alcohol and driving.
Distracted drivers don’t have their eyes on the road, this is another of our regions high-risk road safety issues. Driving requires the complete attention of the person behind the wheel, supporting education around driver distraction due to mobile phones, food and drink, or other passengers is also a significant focus for RoadSafe Hawke’s Bay
During holiday times our roads can be busier than usual. There may also be other types of road users to consider – such as towed caravans or boats, more bikes, scooters or skateboarders. RoadSafe Hawke’s Bay raises awareness with the public in the lead up to these busy times with various check points or information.
RoadSafe Hawke’s Bay promotes and educates drivers on the need to consider and adjust their driving to suit the road conditions. Road, traffic or weather conditions may require a driver to adjust their driving in order to minimise the risk of a crash.
Ensuring all passengers are safely buckled in and protected in the event of a collision continues to be a focus for RoadSafe Hawke’s Bay. Creating awareness around driver responsibilities and the New Zealand law is how they tackle this subject.
