Review of Roys Hill Artificial Recharge Site

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council owns 59 hectares of land near Roys Hill, about 10 kilometres
west of Hastings. About 6 hectares (10%) of this land is used for artificial recharge. The area
is bound by vineyards and there is interest for extending these. Council wants to know its
options and recommendations regarding this.
The collection trench delivers about 400 l/s to the recharge ponds for about 10 months of
each year. It delivered to recharge ponds, about 10,000,000 m3 in 1996; about 13,000,000 m3
in 1997.
There is some net gain to the ground-water aquifer. Some recharged ground water moves
parallel to the Ngaruroro River toward Flaxmere. Pond recharge raises ground water levels
at least 1 kilometres from the ponds and perhaps as distant as 3 kilometres.

Sustainable Low Flow Project-Ruataniwha Rivers Waipawa-Tukipo-Tukituki

Purpose of the Report
This report is produced as one of a series on Hawkes Bay rivers as part of the Regional
Council's Sustainable Low Flow Project (SLFP). It is produced in accordance with policy 8-14 of the Hawkes Bay Regional Council Regional Water Resources Plan (RWRP). Its purpose is to reassess existing Minimum Flow values on the Tukituki, Tukipo and Waipawa rivers that fiow across the Ruataniwha Plains in southern Hawkes Bay and to determine the volume of surface water fiow that may be sustainably allocated for out of stream use from those rivers.

The rivers analysed below have been selected because of their importance in the wider hydrology of the area, and the length and quality of their recorded data. Each of the rivers has a designated Minimum Flow site at which low fiow is assessed during dry spells. If the river level drops below the Minimum Flow at this site all abstraction must cease in order to afford a measure of protection to the aquatic environment. Minor streams on the Ruataniwha Plains with Minimum Flow sites are the Kahahakuri, the Makaretu, the Maharakeke and the Porangahau. Continuous data are not available for these sites and they have not been investigated as part of this report.
