Blue carbon ecosystems (i.e. coastal wetlands including saltmarsh and seagrass) have a high capacity to sequester carbon as well as provide a myriad of other ecosystem services (e.g. coastal protection, water filtration and biodiversity enhancement). In blue carbon ecosystems, carbon can be stored for long time periods making the protection and restoration of these ecosystems an important nature- based solution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and thereby also contributing to the mitigation and adaptation to climate change. This report provides a spatial analysis of blue carbon ecosystems within the Hawke’s Bay Region and their potential for restoration under present day and sea level rise scenarios. Additionally, we provide a summary of other key ecosystem services provided by blue carbon ecosystems that could be used to inform management decisions.
