Youth Environment Team Holds Green Games

Frimley Park Finds Copy

Learn - Discover - Experience is the by-line for this year’s Youth Environment day being held on Wednesday 29 June 2016 at Hastings Girl’s High School and Frimley Park in Hastings.

These are the first Green Games to be held and have been organised by the Hawke’s Bay Environment Youth Council, which this year is made up of 12 secondary students from Napier and Hastings.

“The games will showcase a challenging and interactive set of activities for the participants,” says Sally Chandler, HBRC Community Engagement Coordinator, who is assisting the Youth Environment Council to coordinate the event.

Each of the seven activities will have a challenge attached to it, including one that will see students racing around Frimley Park with a map and clues to follow.

“We are looking forward to exploring the environment of Frimley Park. The Youth Environment Council is particularly thankful for the experts who are giving up their time to share their knowledge with around 70 secondary school students who have registered to attend,” says Mrs Chandler.

One activity - Fleas vs. Fish - is an interactive game that teaches the need to conserve natural ecosystems.  On hand will be Dr Gary Rushworth from HBRC’s fresh water science team. His challenge will give students an opportunity to learn about and discuss habitat loss and land use.
