The Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Group is a shared service arrangement between the five Hawke’s Bay councils. The group office is responsible for ensuring councils and emergency service partners can effectively coordinate the response to civil defence emergencies. We also work closely with a wide range of agencies to improve our communities’ resilience to emergencies.

About the opportunity:

We are looking for a positive-minded person to join our team of emergency management advisors. The key focus of the team is working with our partner councils to ensure we have the capability to respond to any events that occur anywhere in our region.

Reporting to the Team Leader Operational Readiness, you will be responsible for coordinating the development of response personnel’s skills in emergency management, as well as implementing the training and exercising programme that is delivered to local councils and other response partners.

Sound knowledge of civil defence emergency management would be an advantage. You will need to be calm in a crisis and able to work under pressure.

Due to the nature of the role you will need to be flexible and be able to work on call 24 hours, seven days a week either on an individual basis or as part of a rostered team approach.

The salary range for suitable candidates that meet the requirements for this role is $74,790 –  $84,762 depending on qualifications and experience.

About you:

Ideally you will understand the New Zealand emergency management system and the delivery of operational capability.

Successful candidates will also have:

  • A recognised tertiary qualification or certificate/diploma (Level 5 or above) or significant experience in a discipline relevant to, training, emergency management, risk management and/or hazard management.
  • 2-3 years’ experience in emergency management or a related field would be of advantage.
  • Experience in training development and exercise writing would be of advantage, including use of learning management systems.
  • Demonstrated facilitation and engagement skills.
  • High level of Microsoft office and computer skills.
  • A clean full driver’s licence. 
  • Have the legal right to work in New Zealand.
