ECLAB Education Coordinator [Fixed Term] (Vacancy 19-239)

East Coast Life at the boundary (ECLAB) is a collaborative programme that brings together scientists, emergency managers and other experts from across the North Island’s East Coast to makes it easy and exciting to learn more about natural hazards and how they affect us.

Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group (HBCDEM) are looking for an Education Coordinator for ECLAB  to develop creative ways to capture our communities’ interest in understanding more about the Hikurangi subduction zone, earthquakes, tsunami and volcanoes and what they can do to plan and prepare.

About the opportunity:

Based in Napier, this two-year fixed term position will report to the Team Leader Hazard Reduction.

You will work alongside:

  • leading New Zealand scientists to share the latest science understandings in a way that that captures our communities interest
  • educators, to support them by developing curriculum based resources incorporating digital technologies, field trips and activities to bring science to their learners
  • emergency managers, to support local public education campaigns such as our tsunami evacuation hīkoi campagin
  • communities, to bring science to them via social media, public hui and ‘serious’ games

No two days will be the same and some travel will be required across the beautiful East Coast every month or so outside of Hawke’s Bay, to Gisborne, Manawatu-Wanganui and Wellington regions.

The salary range for this position is $63,360 - $71,808 depending on qualifications and experience.

About you:

You will be:

  • Energetic, innovative and creative communicator
  • A qualified teacher or have 5+ years teaching, education or equivalent experience
  • Experienced developing curriculum content including digital technologies
  • Confident and comfortable working with diverse communities
  • An experienced user of social media/digital media
  • Interested in learning about earthquakes, tsunami and volcanic eruptions and planning and preparedness – emergency management knowledge is advantageous.
