The Plant Thru Winter community planting programme continues this weekend, with volunteers working in the Karamū Stream catchment.
These planting events will be smaller than usual with fewer plants so will be from 9- 11am instead of the normal noon finish.
“We’ve been getting good turnouts of volunteers and last weekend was one of the largest with 9000 plants planted by 300 people over 6 hours at the two planting locations – it was impressive to see the commitment local people are making to improving their waterways” says HBRC Senior Open Space Development Officer, Antony Rewcastle.
“Although this weekend’s plantings are smaller and more relaxed, they will still make a difference for water quality and biodiversity in the Karamū and it’s a great chance to check out the progress being made.”
On Saturday the planting day will be at Whakatu, with access through Avison Lane. At this event, volunteers will complete the planting of this section of the river up to the railway bridge. This will be the sixth year of planting which now extends approx. 1.42kms from above Clive, most of it alongside the pathway. This part of the Karamū-Clive is known as the Old Ngaruroro, as it was the channel of the Ngaruroro before it was diverted for flood control around 1970.
On Sunday 24 June, the planting will be at Paki Paki, south of Hastings. This will add plants around the famous Hinetemoa Spring on the Awanui Stream which flows into the Karamū. This planting is also helped by the additional ‘Hot Spot’ funding from rates for places where extra work would make a positive difference to water quality and biodiversity.
Both planting events begin at 9am and no digging is required. Details of locations and what to bring are on hbrc.govt.nz, search #getinvolved and on Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s Facebook page.
