Hawke’s Bay Regional Council will be part of the NZ Police Trade Zone Blue Light Kids Gone Fishing Day on Saturday 19 March.
This popular children and family-focused fishing event will be held at the Iron Pot in Ahuriri between 9am and noon. Following this, the Offshore Power Boat Racing event will be held in the afternoon off the coast nearby.
HBRC’s Harbourmaster Phil Norman and educator Janene Hole will be on hand at ‘Kids Gone Fishing’ to talk to children and their families about boating safety, including lifejackets. The Harbourmaster has run a lifejacket education programme in Hawke’s Bay primary and intermediate schools over the past 2 years, to help children know they must wear a lifejacket in small boats in Hawke’s Bay.
“We are pleased to be involved in this event and support the Police, and again we’ll be reinforcing with both adults and children how to be safe around boats,” says Phil Norman, HBRC’s Harbourmaster.
HBRC’s pollution control officer Ian Lilburn will demonstrate some of the work the oil spill response team do and how oil spills can damage our coastal environment.
Later this month, the Police Sports National Waka Ama Competition 2016 will be held on Thursday 31 March and Friday 1 April off the coast and in the Inner Harbour. HBRC’s Harbourmaster has made arrangements for recreational and commercial boats to have safe access through the race area.
