First Planting at Waitangi Star Compass Needs Volunteers

Waitangi Regional Park Star Compass Thumb

People keen to be the first to add native plants around the Star Compass, the new feature in Waitangi Regional Park, will have the chance to make their mark on the weekend.

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is holding a planting day on Saturday 6 May at Waitangi Regional Park in association with the Great Give, for which this is their second community project.

The star compass shows how Māori navigated the oceans and has quickly become a popular feature on the coast.

New plantings will enhance the compass and pathways, and also the new wetland area that has been created alongside the star compass.  The wetland aims to give whitebait species a good head start, and be a habitat for wading and sea birds.

The event is free and the whole family can join in.  Planting starts at 9.00am and will be followed by a barbecue lunch.  Registrations are essential as places are limited by the number of plants – and people are welcome to sign up here

If you want to plan ahead, other planting day events are coming up in May, June and July and registrations for these are also being accepted on the Events webpage.
