Riverbed Gravel Management Review

Ngaruroro1 Carrick Rd Jan17

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council (HBRC) has revised its Gravel Management Plan and its Code of Environmental Practice for River Control and Waterway Works, 2017. The plan and code are about how the riverbed gravel extraction will be managed and HBRC wants to hear the community views on the proposals. A Statement of Proposal was adopted by HBRC at its meeting of 29 March 2017. These documents can be viewed below or by contacting HBRC Napier office.

Our Proposal

HBRC has undertaken a review of its gravel management operations over the past six years. This review has examined the gravel supply, availability and demand, ecology and implications for flood protection as well as different management options. A key result of the review was to improve understanding of the way river control and gravel management activities impact on the river environment, and to change the way gravel extraction consents are currently managed.

HBRC is proposing to seek a global consent for the management of gravel in the central and southern rivers of Hawke’s Bay from the Esk River to the Tukituki River and tributaries. Separate resource consent applications are under preparation. This special consultative procedure is to enable the public to be aware of the proposal and have an opportunity to present their views.
