The 1931 Earthquake Survivors Afternoon tea is a special event started by volunteers to recognise the people who came through the terrible events of February 1931. The event is part of the civic commemorations including a memorial service, followed by Art Deco Weekend which celebrates the rebuilding of the city.
The event is held at Napier Boys High School on Sunday 12 February at 2 pm. It is by invitation only, and earthquake survivors who have registered with the Napier Mayor's Office should have received their invitation and rsvp'd by now. The guest speaker will be Captain Karl Woodhead of the Royal NZ Navy.
The afternoon tea still has plenty of volunteers involved serving the teas, including Napier Boys High School boarders. The event is supported by Hawke's Bay Regional Council, Napier City Council, HB Civil Defence, HB Red Cross and Napier Boys High School. We also appreciate the support of local businesses in assisting with supplies for this community event.
