Safer Lifejackets Old4New This Weekend

Sue Tucker Coastguard Old4New stopped in Wairoa Thumb

Boaties will have an opportunity to upgrade their lifejackets at a discounted price this Saturday [14 January].

The “Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade” promotion is being run by Coastguard, and is supported by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Harbourmaster and Maritime NZ.

“All boaties should regularly review the condition of their lifejackets, and this is a good opportunity to save some money while getting enough lifejackets that are the right sizes for their mates and in good nick,” says Martin Moore, Harbourmaster.

Sue Tucker, from Coastguard, will be at the Napier Coastguard headquarters on Meeanee Quay in Westshore/ Ahuriri on Saturday afternoon from 3pm. People can trade in their old or damaged lifejackets for new Hutchwilco jackets at a discounted price.  More details are online at www.coastguard.nz.

Sue Tucker and the Old4New van stopped in Wairoa briefly this week on her way to Gisborne, as local boaties had shown interest in having the opportunity to upgrade their lifejackets.

Anyone who can’t make the Saturday trade in can take old lifejackets to Firmans Marine during the following week, 16-22 January, to take up the trade in offer.

Lifejackets are essential in Hawke’s Bay as the rules are -

  • lifejackets must be worn at all times on vessels 6 metres or less when underway
  • lifejackets must be worn at all times on paddlecraft, e.g. waka ama and kayaks. Paddleboards are exempt if a leg rope is used in broken water
  • all boats must carry the correctly-sized lifejacket for each person on board, which must be worn when the skipper requests it.
