Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Chief Executive Andrew Newman appeared at the first day of the Government Inquiry into the Havelock North Water Contamination today.
He told the hearing HBRC takes the Government Inquiry very seriously and views it as a matter of public importance. He says the council has a range of its scientific and technical staff working on aspects of the inquiry and will provide every assistance it can.
Mr Newman says HBRC’s responsibilities with respect to the quality of drinking water are limited and primarily come from the Resource Management Act (RMA) and relate to the protection of the water source.
He says HBRC is undertaking an independent investigation of the Brookvale Road bores under the RMA and expects to complete this by late November.
The Government Inquiry will continue with public hearings being held from 28 November – 2 December and 12-20 December. The inquiry will report back to Government by the end of March 2017.
