Rainfall update

Rain for media release 23 June
We understand it has been an anxious time for some of you overnight, as the heavy rain has continued.
While the rain has been heavy and will continue over the weekend, this is not extreme flooding.
The region has had 30-180mm of rain in the past 24 hours to 6am, with the heaviest rain in the ranges.
In the past two days, the region has had 240 mm in the ranges, with 100 mm elsewhere.
Due to the very wet conditions, the rain has resulted in surface flooding and river levels rising to between mean annual and 20 year levels (in Waipawa).
We expect another 150m – 200 mm of rain in the ranges over the next three days, and 50mm- 100mm of rain in the foothills and plains.
We expect Wairoa, Ngaruroro and Tutaekuri river levels to rise again on the weekend, probably hover around five year levels – bank to bank, so reach the bottom of the stopbanks.
We expect Waipawa, to be at between five year and 20 year levels – causing the river levels to rise part way up stopbanks.
Here is a summary of our main rivers and levels:
Wairoa– currently below alert level, did reach mean annual level last night
Esk – quick rise and fall of around two metres from normal, currently still about 1-1.5 metres higher than normal
Tutaekuri – mean annual levels reached, which is about 2 metres above normal. Currently around 1.5 metres higher than normal
Ngaruroro – slow steady rise, currently at alert levels, will rise during the day.
Upper Tukituki – Waipawa River at Waipawa – rose to 20 year level – bank to bank, dropped by 200 mm overnight.
Middle Tukituki to Lower Tukituki – at mean annual level, will likely rise to five year levels later today.
