The HBCDEM group is looking for a positive-minded individual with a background in emergency management, community engagement, or a related field to join our small but high-profile team of emergency management staff. Under the leadership of the Team Leader Community Engagement, the Emergency Management Officer (Central Hawke’s Bay) will actively promote public education on emergency management, support local community resilience plans and implement operational readiness projects for the CHB District Council.

In this role you will focus on working with local communities to allow them to build their resilience, supporting a community led response and recovery in an emergency event. You will need the ability to build and maintain strong, effective relationships with a wide range of local community leaders, groups and networks and proactively engage them in resilience building processes. Alongside this you will be a vital part of implementing regional operational preparedness initiatives at a local level. You will support CHB District Council to establish an effective Emergency Operations Centre and fulfil their statutory requirements under the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002 in an event. While the role is primarily aimed at helping communities reduce their risk by increasing their preparedness for a civil defence emergency, you will need to be prepared to play a role in the response to any emergency should it arise.

This is a 12-month fixed term role, 40 hours per week.

About you:

You will have a positive and proactive attitude, a passion for community empowerment and a drive to support our local Council to establish better outcomes for the community. Ideally you will also have:

  • A recognised tertiary qualification or certificate/diploma (Level 5 or above), or significant experience in a discipline relevant to emergency management or community engagement.
  • 2-3 years experience in emergency management or community engagement work.
  • A solutions-focused attitude, with the flexibility to adjust to the wide and varied demands of a fast-paced work environment.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to tailor your style to a particular audience.

The salary range for this role is between $75,687 to $84,097 and will depend on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. HBRC also has a strong commitment to developing and upskilling people within a flexible and supportive working environment.

All applicants must have existing rights to work in New Zealand.

Applications close 14 September 2021 however we may interview suitable candidates throughout the process and close the listing early if we find the right person for the role.
