At Hawke’s Bay Regional Council our purpose is to work with our community to protect and manage the region’s precious taonga of rivers, lakes, soils, air, coast and biodiversity for health, wellbeing and connectivity. Our organisation is diverse and our work is varied. Our structure comprises of six key business units; Corporate Services, Integrated Catchment Management, Asset Management, Māori Partnerships, Policy & Regulation, and the Executive Advisory Group which also consists of the Civil Defence and Emergency Management.

About the Opportunity:

Our native species and ecosystems are in crisis from a host of threats such as invasive pests. Want to be part of the solution and have real impact? We are looking for a passionate and dedicated Terrestrial Ecologist to join the Biosecurity/Biodiversity team to do just this. This is a rare opportunity to join a small driven team of specialist professionals based in Napier who are well regarded in the Biodiversity space. This team is responsible for protecting and enhancing Biodiversity across the region and works with a wide range of stakeholders to achieve this.

This full-time permanent Terrestrial Ecologist position will be involved in a diverse range of stimulating and challenging multidisciplinary projects, including leading the regional wetland monitoring programme, producing or providing input into biodiversity protection and enhancement plans, providing specific and appropriate terrestrial ecological advice for a range of internal and external customers and feeding into policy to help drive better biodiversity outcomes across the region.

About you:

You are passionate about protecting and enhancing New Zealand’s unique biodiversity and have experience working across a broad field requiring strong technical skills and knowledge in multiple ecological disciplines (e.g. botany, ornithology, wetland ecology), with a good understanding of a wide range of ecological principles and field ecology monitoring techniques.

Ideally you will also have:

• Post Graduate qualification in environmental science with strong ecology and biodiversity focus.
• An understanding of “state of the environment” reporting.
• An understanding of Resource Management Act 1991 and other key statutory frameworks such as National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management and National Policy Statement for Indigenous Biodiversity.
• Experience in undertaking current best practice freshwater wetland monitoring would be an advantage.
• Good understanding of other ecological monitoring and investigation processes and techniques with an emphasis on terrestrial ecology.
• Good understanding of, and experience in using Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
• An ability to effectively communicate with members of all parts of the community, including the rural sector.
• Capable of carrying out field work in isolated and/or rough terrain.
• Valid driver’s licence
• An understanding of inter-agency involvement in environmental management and an ability to liaise with other agencies when necessary would be an advantage
• Experience in operating Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (such as drones) would be advantage

 The salary range for this role will depend on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
