Possum control programme around Wairoa

Wairoa Urban PCA Map Jan 21

A possum control operation will begin around the edge of Wairoa this month.

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council will be working with Wairoa District Council on the programme to improve the biodiversity of the area.

Wairoa District Council Property Manager, Luke Knight, says they’re aiming to reduce possum numbers to a low level in Wairoa and to enhance biodiversity.

This operation is part of the Regional Council’s urban programme. Biosecurity Team Leader Animal Pests, Allan Beer, says it’s having great results.

“Contractors will use a variety of methods to ensure an efficient and safe control programme, and residents can decide the type of control method they want on their property.

“The programme is supported by Wairoa District Council, and as with any community programme, the level of success depends on the level of community support,” adds Mr Beer.

Contractors will contact all property owners or residents whose land they would like to access and will need the landowners signed permission before they start control work. Landowners will be able to discuss signs of possums, control and trap methods with the contractor.

For more information about this community programme contact the contractor, Jake Bowcock of Rural Pest Services on 021 280 2988.
