What is a representation review?

Hawk'e Bay Regional Council is required to take a fresh look at how you are represented around the Council table at least once every six years. 

We held a representation review in 2021 following the Council's decision to introduce Māori constituencies earlier in the year, and this affects the total number of councillors, the numbers of constituencies, and the boundaries of constituencies.

Final proposal for representation arrangements for the 2022 Local Elections

The Local Government Commission (LGC) agreed with the Regional Council’s final proposal as resolved on 27 October 2021 in its Determination issued on 7 April 2022. 

The LGC agreed that the Hawke’s Bay region will be divided into seven constituencies:

1. Māui ki te Raki Māori Constituency, electing one councillor
2. Māui ki te Tonga Māori Constituency, electing one councillor
3. Wairoa General Constituency, electing one councillor
4. Ngaruroro General Constituency, electing one councillor 
5. Ahuriri/Napier General Constituency, electing three councillors
6. Heretaunga/Hastings General Constituency, electing three councillors
7. Tamatea/Central Hawke’s Bay General Constituency, electing one councillor.
