Hawke's Bay Disaster Relief Trust

The fund was activated immediately following Cyclone Gabrielle, and thanks to generous donations from around New Zealand has helped over 5,770 people to date.

About the fund

The Hawke's Bay Disaster Relief Trust (HBDRT) was reinstated post-Cyclone Gabrielle to assist people with short-term funds for needs that were not being met by other sources. The Government seeded an initial donation of $1m in February 2023 to the fund.

The Trustees are the Mayors and Chair from Hastings District Council, the Napier City Council, Central Hawke’s Bay District Council and the Wairoa District Council, and Hawke’s Bay Regional Council. The Trust was administered by Hawkes Bay Regional Council staff.

How the funds are being distributed

Distributions from the Trust have been made through two phases of work. Phase 1 being immediate access to up to $1000, and Phase 2 being up to $10,000.

The fund is not proactively seeking additional donations, but for people still wishing to give it is likely there will be a Phase 3 in the middle of the year when there are enough funds to administer.
