Presentation – science presentation about Ngaruroro and Tutaekuri water quality

The TANK Group pastoral farmer representatives, with the support of the Council and Beef and Lamb NZ, worked with farmers to involve them in the TANK project.  A number of public meetings were held across the TANK catchments in 2016 and early 2017.  A farmer reference group was established to help provide information and feedback to the TANK Group.  A particular focus for the group was on how to meet a target for reducing the amount of sediment (and associated phosphorous) lost as a result of land use activities and soil erosion.  More information about the group is available from Mary-Anne Baker (mary-anne.baker@hbrc.govt.nz) Peter Kay (peterk@hdc.govt.nz)  and Ivan Knauf (wairua.farm@xtra.co.nz).

The meeting presentations and meeting notes are provided below.  Pastoral farmers are particularly encouraged to take an interest in this work.

Irricalc

The TANK plan will require the use of the irrigation water demand model Irricalc to help determine actual and reasonable irrigation water use.  The Council is currently upgrading the model to include more Hawke’s Bay information about climate, crop types and soils.  We are updating the calculator to include more Hawke’s bay data.  Keep visiting the website for more information

The model is currently available at this link.

Stream Depletion Calculator

The TANK Plan contains a number of new initiatives to help manage stream flow depletion effects caused by groundwater pumping.  One is a new calculator that shows how much stream depletion is being caused from a particular point of take.

The Stream Depletion Calculator is available here

These documents explain the TANK processes and timeframes it is operating to.

The TANK Group held its last meeting on 26 July 2018, but the work of the TANK Plan Change continues. A Draft TANK Plan was presented to the Regional Planning Committee for the first time on 14 August 2018. The details of the draft Plan - once ‘workshopped’ by RPC members over the coming months - will lead to a final draft for public consultation and formal submission.

There were a handful of matters where the TANK Group was unable to reach consensus, requiring further review and consideration by the RPC. These items of non-consensus are clearly highlighted, and the next iteration of the draft Plan will clearly show the Council’s position on these matters.

Facebook live meetings

Mary-Anne Baker, one of the Regional Council's planners, ran two Facebook live events to answer questions about the TANK Plan. She created a presentation to provide more detail about the plan.
