This data is sourced from a real-time feed which is not assessed for quality or completeness. From time to time communication links or instrumentation break may lead to the under-reporting of rainfall.

Understanding our rainfall data

This section helps breaks down any terms or key definitions featured in the above charts, ensuring you can interpret the data accurately and confidently whether you're new to data analysis or just need a quick refresher.

Time range selector options:

• Hourly - total rainfall per hour in mm for a given time range. I.e., it adds up all measurements registered in 1 hour.
• Daily - total rainfall per day in mm for a given time range.
• Continuous - 15 minutes frequency data for a given time range. The data is broken down in the original frequency it was recorded, it’s not added up as accumulated. 

More Information

The data presented here is derived from the 38 telemetered gauges, many of which are associated with a corresponding river flow monitoring site. All sites use a 0.5mm tipping bucket rain gauge and record rainfall intensity information at 15 minute intervals.

The primary purpose of the telemetered rainfall network is to provide an early flood warning network for the region, in particular in the Wairoa and northern part of the region. This information is normally updated back to our offices every 24 hours unless there is need for more intensive interrogation during a given storm event, when updates can be obtained every 15 minutes if necessary.
