Work starts to protect Wairoa Destination Playground

The Destination Playground next to the Wairoa Community Centre will become a work site from Monday 29 October as a retaining wall is constructed to stop more of the playground’s land from slipping into the Wairoa River.

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has engaged Lattey Group to construct a 40 metre long retaining wall to protect the new playground.

“The playground on the bank of the river is in the heart of the Wairoa community, so we’ve been monitoring the site and working up a project plan, alongside Wairoa District Council, to protect this new and extremely popular community asset,” says HBRC Principal Design Engineer David Carruth.

Earlier this year, erosion occurred on a section of the river bank adjacent to the playground. The project works will create a hard river bank for the Wairoa River in this area, to prevent further localised slips, keeping the playground safe for community use.

“We’re mindful that this area is used by many in the community so we advise caution while this work is being carried out,” adds Mr Carruth.

The work is expected to take up to four weeks to complete.
