Enviroschools Hawke’s Bay has received a financial boost following recent Council Long Term Plan submissions.

Regional Coordinator for Enviroschools in Hawke’s Bay, Sally Chandler from Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, presented to all of the region’s territorial authorities and is extremely pleased with the outcome. HBRC has been a consistent funding partner of the programme.

Mrs Chandler says, “For the first time, since the programme started in our region in 2003, we have secured funding from Central Hawke’s Bay District Council. The amount of $10,000 in this current financial year will allow us to increase our reach into Central Hawke’s Bay schools.

“We will soon be requesting interest from local schools to join the programme. With the support of CHBDC, we can deliver the environmental messages that are important to them.”

Central Hawke’s Bay currently has six Enviroschools, which Mrs Chandler hopes will grow to eight by the end of the year.

“We also plan to work with other schools in the region to deliver important environmental messages for Council, especially around waste.“

Napier City Council also increased its funding to $15,000 per annum for three years. The funding will be shared with the Napier Kindergarten Association.

“This is a real win for our schools and the environment. We are really looking forward to working alongside Napier City Council staff and strengthening our relationship.”

The Enviroschools programme is designed to drive long-term behaviour change towards sustainable practices.

“It empowers young people to plan, design and take action in their schools and communities.”

The aim of Enviroschools is to create a generation of people who think and act sustainably.

Mrs Chandler says, “With this new and increased financial support this becomes more achievable in our region”.
