TANK Group gets jet powered

On Sunday 20 November, the Group developing a Plan Change to manage the quality and quantity of water in the region’s main river systems will get a first-hand view, from mid-stream.

Participants of the 30+ member TANK Group will be hosted by the Central Districts’ Jet Boat Club. The field trip will look at the state of the Ngaruroro River and get some close-up experience of what people value this river for.

The unusual trip was suggested to TANK by Central Districts’ Jet Boat Club as an effective – and much quicker - way for the Group to experience and understand how the river is valued for a wide range of things like its natural ecosystem, a habitat for fish and birds, recreational uses such as boating, fishing and swimming.  The Group will be considering many things during this trip including low and high flows, stormwater runoff, sediment issues, stock grazing, irrigation, different land uses, and HBRC’s environmental monitoring programmes.

A convoy of jet boats will leave from Clive boat ramp, visiting Waitangi Estuary and other sites of interest on Ngaruroro River as far upriver as Whanawhana.

The TANK Group meets every six weeks. TANK has a focus on the Tutaekuri, Ahuriri estuary, Ngaruroro and Karamu catchments and is working on making recommendations for a Plan Change expected late in 2017.
